Op maandag 19 januari vindt de Third Place Summit plaats in het nieuwe Luxor Theater. Een dag die niet alleen inspiratie biedt, maar je ook concrete inzichten geeft over jouw transitie en strategie naar een derde plek.
Hoe ben je van betekenis? Wie zijn je stakeholders? Hoe doe je het samen en maak je écht maatschappelijke impact in jouw omgeving? Absolute internationale topsprekers Karen Christensen, Joe Pine en Toni Griffin nemen je mee op een inspirerende reis die zorgt voor het juiste fundament. Tijdens deze dag behandelen we de drie hoofdpilaren COME, STAY en GROW die leidend zijn bij het realiseren van een derde plek met impact op het gebied van cultuur, welzijn, maatschappij en educatie.
Een dag vol kennis, praktijkvoorbeelden en netwerkmogelijkheden. Interessant voor culturele en maatschappelijke instellingen, beleidsmakers en fondsen die zich verder willen ontwikkelen of nu echt aan de slag willen met de transitie naar een Third Place.

10.00 uur - Opening
Presentator Ernest van der Kwast, Marc van Kaam (directeur Luxor Theater Rotterdam) en Aat Vos (architect en oprichter includi) openen de dag en leggen meer uit over de fundamenten van een Third Place aan de hand van de hoofdpilaren COME, STAY en GROW.
10.30 uur - COME | Karen Christensen
Welcome to the Third Place: Rediscovering our sense of community
Third Places zijn het kloppende hart van verschillende communities. Karen Christensen legt uit welke eigenschappen een derde plek zowel uitnodigend als plezierig maken. De focus ligt hierbij op het aantrekken van personen op plekken waar sociale cohesie wordt bevorderd.
11.15 uur - STAY | Toni Griffin
The Just City in 8 Acts
Toni Griffin is oprichter van Urban American City, een bureau voor planning en ontwerp om steden te hervormen met het oog op meer rechtvaardigheid. Tijdens haar presentatie vertelt Griffin, met gebruik van verschillende cases, meer over haar werk rondom ontwerprechtvaardigheid.
12.00 uur - GROW | Joe Pine
From Third Place to Transformation Chrysalis
Alhoewel Third Places altijd hebben bestaan, zijn deze plekken tegenwoordig steeds vaker onderdeel van onze Experience Economy. Joe Pine legt in zijn keynote uit hoe Third Places zichzelf moeten blijven ontwikkelen om zo essentiele plekken te worden voor persoonlijke groei.

14.00 uur - Workshop 1
Tijdens deze workshopronde heb je de mogelijkheid om meer te leren over een van de zes modules uit het Third Place Fundamentals model van includi: Access, Use, Safety, Experience, Community en Development.

15.00 uur - Workshop 2
Tijdens deze workshopronde heb je de mogelijheid om op een tweede module te focussen vanuit het Third Place Fundamentals model van includi. Dezelfde professionals uit de eerste workshopronde zullen ook deze sessies begeleiden.
16.15 uur - Best Practices
Na de workshops volg je een panel waarbij inspirerende voorbeelden worden behandeld van organisaties die zich bezighouden met Third Places. Je leert onder andere ook meer over de doelstellingen van Luxor Theater Rotterdam rondom het creëren van een Third Place.
17.15 uur - Afsluiting en borrel
We sluiten de dag af met een gezellige borrel en genoeg mogelijkheden om mensen uit het vak te leren kennen.
Over de sprekers
Karen Christensen
Karen Christensen is auteur, uitgever en activist. Haar werk richt zich op de kracht van derde plekken en hoe deze bijdragen aan het opbouwen van een gemeenschap. Ze is de hoofdauteur van de opvolger van Ray Oldenburg’s klassieke boek voor derde plekken, The Great Good Place. Karen wil het verhaal actualiseren en laten zien hoe derde plaatsen ons helpen bij het oplossen van drie urgente uitdagingen van de 21e eeuw: klimaatverandering, eenzaamheid en politieke polarisatie. Ze is de oprichtster van de Train Campaign en onderzoeksmedewerkster bij het Fairbank Center van Harvard.
Joe Pine
B. Joseph Pine II is een internationaal gerenommeerd auteur, spreker en managementadviseur. Joe heeft gesproken op het World Economic Forum in Davos, de oorspronkelijke TED-conferentie in Californië en de Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. Als docent aan de School of Business van Northeastern University was hij medeoprichter van Strategic Horizons LLP waar hij bedrijven hielp nieuwe manieren te ontwikkelen om waarde toe te voegen aan hun aanbod. Joe is een productief schrijver en heeft vele boeken op zijn naam staan, waaronder The Experience Economy: Competing for Customer Time, Attention, and Money; Infinite Possibility; Authenticity; Mass Customization; en nieuw in 2026, The Transformation Economy: Guiding Customers to Achieve Their Aspirations.
Toni Griffin
Toni L. Griffin is de oprichter van Urban American City, een bureau voor planning en ontwerp dat samenwerkt met publieke, private en non-profitpartners om steden te hervormen met het oog op meer rechtvaardigheid. Haar bureau leidt projecten die langdurige ongelijkheden aanpakken en heeft belangrijke projecten begeleid in Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Rochester en St. Louis. Ze is hoogleraar stedenbouwkunde aan de Harvard Graduate School of Design en oprichter en directeur van het Just City Lab. Haar carrière omvat architectuur, openbaar bestuur in Washington DC en Newark, en filantropische adviesfuncties. Ze heeft veel geschreven over ontwerprechtvaardigheid en heeft zitting gehad in de Amerikaanse Commissie voor Schone Kunsten.
Ernest van der Kwast (presentator)
Ernest van der Kwast (1981) werd geboren in Bombay, India. In 2010 brak hij door met zijn roman Mama Tandoori, die in Nederland en Italië een bestseller werd met meer dan 100.000 verkochte exemplaren. Hij schreef de novelle Giovanna’s navel en de roman De ijsmakers, waarvan de vertaalrechten aan negen landen zijn verkocht. Ook won hij met deze roman de Dioraphte Jongerenliteratuur Prijs. Van zijn hand verschenen verder Het wonder dat niet omvalt en Jouw toekomst is mijn toekomst, waarin hij de verhalen van vier vluchtelingen optekende. Zijn roman Ilyas verscheen in 2020.
Over Come, Stay, Grow
De summit volgt de driedeling Come, Stay, Grow. Dit zijn de fundamenten van elke Third Place. Het zijn plekken die mensen uitnodigen om te komen, die zo prettig en ontspannen zijn dat je wilt blijven, en die ruimte geven om te groeien. Soms betekent dat nieuwe mensen ontmoeten, iets leren, of simpelweg de wereld even anders bekijken.
De Come, Stay, Grow - structuur komt uit het gelijknamige boek van includi, waarin Aat Vos en Amy Goedhart hun Third Place Fundamentals model introduceren. Dit model gebaseerd op jarenlang onderzoek bundelt meer dan honderd sociale theorieën en laat laag voor laag zien wat nodig is om verbindende plekken te maken en te onderhouden. Tijdens de summit krijg je een voorproefje van dit uitgebreide model en ontdek je hoe jij plekken kunt creëren waar mensen willen komen, blijven en groeien.
Dit evenement is Engels gesproken. Luxor Theater Rotterdam organiseert de Third Place Summit in samenwerking met includi en Gemeente Rotterdam.

The Third Place Summit will take place on Monday the 19th of January in the nieuwe Luxor Theater. A day full of inspiration and detailed insights into your transition and strategy towards building a third place.
How do you make a difference? Who are your stakeholders? How do you work together and make a real social impact in your community? Leading international speakers, such as Karen Christensen, Joe Pine and Toni Griffin will take you on an inspiring journey towards building your own third place. During this day, we will discuss the three main pillars COME, STAY and GROW. These pillars are key to creating a third place that has an impact on arts, well-being, society and education.
Expect loads of new knowledge, practical examples and networking opportunities. Interesting for cultural and social institutions, policymakers and cultural funds that want to develop further or really want to get started with the transition to a third place.

The Just City in 8 Acts
Toni Griffin is founder of Urban American City, a planning and design practice to reshape cities toward greater justice. During her talk Griffin will, using different cases based on her own experience, elaborate on her work on design justice.
12:00 - GROW | Joe Pine
From Third Place to Transformation Chrysalis
While Third Places have always been around, they are a core element of today's Experience Economy. Joe Pine explains in his keynote how Third Places have to shift into becoming chrisalises for personal transformation.

17:15 - Closing of the day and drinks
We close the day with drinks and ample opportunities to meet people from the field.
About the speakers
Karen Christensen
Karen Christensen is an author, publishing entrepreneur and activist. She focuses on the power of third places and how they build community. She is the lead author of the sequel to Ray Oldenburg's classic book on third places, The Great Good Place. Karen wants to update the story and show how third places help us solve three urgent challenges of the 21st century: climate change, loneliness, and political polarization. She is the founder of the Train Campaign and a research associate at Harvard’s Fairbank Center.
Joe Pine
B. Joseph Pine II is an internationally acclaimed author, speaker, and management advisor. Joe has addressed the World Economic Forum in Davos, the original TED conference in California, and the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas. A Lecturer in Northeastern University’s School of Business, he cofounded Strategic Horizons LLP to help businesses conceive and design new ways of adding value to their economic offerings. A prolific writer, Joe’s many books include The Experience Economy: Competing for Customer Time, Attention, and Money; Infinite Possibility; Authenticity; Mass Customization; and new in 2026, The Transformation Economy: Guiding Customers to Achieve Their Aspirations.
Toni Griffin
Toni L. Griffin is the founder of urban American city, a planning and design practice that works with public, private, and nonprofit partners to reshape cities toward greater justice. Her firm leads projects that address long standing inequalities and has guided major planning efforts in Detroit, Chicago, Pittsburgh, Rochester, and St. Louis. She is Professor in Practice of Urban Planning at the Harvard Graduate School of Design and founding director of the Just City Lab. Her career spans architecture, public leadership in Washington DC and Newark, and philanthropic advisory roles. She has written widely on design justice and served on the US Commission on Fine Arts.
Ernest van der Kwast (host)
Ernest van der Kwast (1981) was born in Bombay, India. In 2010, he made his breakthrough with his novel Mama Tandoori, which became a bestseller in the Netherlands and Italy, selling more than 100,000 copies. He wrote the novella Giovanna’s navel and the novel De ijsmakers (The Ice Makers), the translation rights to which have been sold to nine countries. He also won the Dioraphte Youth Literature Prize with this novel. He has also published Het wonder dat niet omvalt (The Miracle That Doesn't Fall Over) and Jouw toekomst is mijn toekomst (Your Future Is My Future), in which he recorded the stories of four refugees. The summit follows the three-part structure Come, Stay, Grow. These are the foundations for every Third Place. They are places that invite people to come, places that are so pleasant and relaxing that you would like to stay, and places that give you room to grow. Sometimes that means meeting new people, learning something, or simply seeing the world from a different perspective.
The Come, Stay, Grow structure comes from the new book by includi, in which Aat Vos and Amy Goedhart introduce their Third Place Fundamentals model. Based on years of research, this model brings together more than a hundred social theories and shows what is needed to create and maintain places in which social connections can be made. During the summit, you will get a preview of this comprehensive model and discover how you can create places where people want to come, stay and grow.
